Preschool

Classroom Curriculum

Preschoolers use their newfound independence, language, and latent curiosity to play, build, and respond to their world. RRDC preschool classrooms challenge children with more complex materials as students work to recognize patterns, accomplish tasks, and care for their environment.

In the classroom, students can explore dramatic play, storytelling, visual arts, puzzles, math manipulatives, toys, and games at their own pace. Balanced with time for music, cultural education, outdoor play, nap, meals, and snacks, preschoolers practice a daily routine that builds confidence before kindergarten.

Students and staff bond with tight-knit relationships as preschoolers form their first friendships and social networks outside of home where they are safe and supported to learn, play, and grow.

Music Education

Preschool music classes usher students into a world of discovering music through new songs, poems, rhythm chants, folk dances, stories, and instrumental exploration. Preschoolers interact with music through gross motor movement and improvisation games that strengthen musicianship skills and prepare students for a lifetime of music learning.

Specialists use playful learning techniques to make music learning fun and accessible to all students as they learn to express themselves through their voices, bodies, and creative minds. Students develop critical thinking and social skills as they work with peers to solve creative challenges and invent new ideas.

Students are encouraged to explore their singing voices and listen to various musical styles and genres. Extended music time at the end of group lessons allows preschool students to play and improvise with specialists in an informal, small group setting to meet students at their creative level and interests.

Cultural Curriculum

At preschool level, students can critically engage with stories, art, and objects that both reflect their own heritage and open windows into new cultures around the world.

RRDC students learn about different regions of the globe in two-month periods, allowing students to learn about all the regions of the world and their local community over their two years in a preschool classroom.

Staff uses lesson plans from RRDC partner ZIBI Consulting Group to engage with primary source materials and open-ended creative projects reflecting the target culture. Students also meet with cultural ambassadors in the classroom to learn about their experiences and interact with objects, art, and photographs from their homes.
